The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has cleared the appointment of NS Vishwanathan as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He is currently working as an executive director at the RBI since April 2014 and overseeing the banking regulation and non-banking department. He would succeed H R Khan, who will retire on July 3. The appointment came as per the rule under which RBI has provision for four deputy governors, two of whom are appointed from outside while the other two Deputy Governors are traditionally appointed from those working within RBI.

Vishwanathan, MA (Economics), served as a Director of Punjab National Bank from September 6, 2012 to May 31, 2013. He was also nominee director at Dena Bank Ltd. from May 30, 2011 to September 6, 2012. He has also served as Chief General Manager of Vigilance at IFCI Ltd, Delhi-based government-owned finance company. In his new role, he will take care of financial markets, external investments, and operations, payment and settlements, information technology, foreign exchange and internal debt management.
