China, Russia to hold joint naval exercises in SCS
China and Russia will hold routine joint naval exercises in the South China Sea in September this year. This is being done after when recently court in the Hague ruled stated that China does not have historic rights to the SCS. But China rejected the ruling and refused to participate in the case.
China claims most of the SCS, through which more than five trillion dollars of trade moves annually. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam have rival claims. Russia has been a strong backer of China's stance on the arbitration case, which was brought by the Philippines. China rejected the ruling and refused to participate in the case.
For this exercise, China has built a series of artificial islands on rocks and reefs in the area hosting facilities capable of supporting military operations, widely seen as an attempt to bolster its control of the strategically vital waters.
