Although Apple never publicly admitted to having been working on any such project, NYT reported that they had laid off dozens of workers as part of a "reboot". At nearly a 1000 people, the team was huge and ran into problems which included showing how they were different and better than other companies working on the same technology.

Project Titan overhaul comes at a time when tech giants like Google and Tesla are investing huge amounts of money in autonomous vehicles. Google and Uber have been working together on getting the self-driving cars on the roads as soon as possible. Singapore has already beaten Uber by bringing driverless taxis on its streets. The first country to ever do so.
